Exploring Identity Through Mixed Media: Maria DeAngelo’s Self-Portrait Journey

Writer's picture: Arlenes Artist Materials, Inc.Arlenes Artist Materials, Inc.

We are all made of our experiences, our environments, and the people who love us. Every layer of our lives contributes to who we are—just like the layers in a mixed media artwork. Artist, mentor, and instructor Maria DeAngelo is bringing this idea to life with a deeply personal self-portrait.

Created on Fabriano paper, her piece is a collage of memories and materials that hold special meaning:

  •  Scraps of her printmaking

  •  A sewing pattern for hats she made for her kids

  • Letters from her Mom and Dad

  • Pulp paper she made with Carol Marie Vossler

  •  And so much more

Each element is a reflection of her past, present, and creative journey—woven together to explore what portraiture can be today.
