About the event

Masks have been essential parts of storytelling in every culture in the world, from every time period in history. From Japanese Noh Theater to Carnivale Festivals, from Greek tragedies to ComicCon cosplays, masks help us immerse ourselves in a character, to embody their essence, and to keep stories alive from generation to generation. This class is perfect for anyone who wants to step outside their comfort zone, or cosplayers looking for an outlet for a new creation.

In this class, makers will turn basic mask forms into masterpieces of melodrama, using paperclay, wool fibers, acrylic paint, and other recycled/upcycled materials. The first session will include learning armature and foam techniques for building the shape of the mask, and sculpting it to allow for freedom of speech and movement. Over the week, the masks will dry, and makers will return to paint and finish their masks, and learn finishing and embellishing techniques, as well as brainstorming ways to incorporate masks into a larger costume or cosplay. Supplies are not included in the cost of the workshop. Refer to the Materials List linked below for more information.

NOTE: Makers should come prepared with ideas for a character mask to create—they can use either a reference from a book/series/table-top role playing game, etc, or create their own original character.
